How Volunteering Works

Thank you for your interest in joining our community of committed, fearless volunteers! There are so many ways for you to engage. Some opportunities are for pro bono attorneys, while others seek volunteers with a wide variety of skills.

How Do I Volunteer?

First, create an account or sign in. If you aren't sure what type of opportunity is right for you, read through the types of volunteer opportunities we offer and visit our Current Volunteer Opportunities page to apply for any that fit your skills, interests, and availability. Our team will review your application and contact you shortly to discuss volunteer options.

We regularly update our Volunteer Opportunities page with the specific opportunities that are available. Click on each link to read short summaries of the specific individuals currently in need of representation at detention centers where we work.

Note that you only need to complete one volunteer application. If you are a returning volunteer and would like to take on another opportunity with the Justice Campaign, please contact our pro bono coordination team directly at probonocoordinator@immcouncil.org.

What Happens After I Apply?

Once you submit your application, the Justice Campaign team will review your information to determine the best way that you can fit into our work. Once we review, we will reach out to you to discuss opportunities in more detail. We strive to respond within a couple weeks of receiving your application.

For Attorneys

Once you have been matched with a volunteer opportunity, we will provide you with all the substantive and logistical support you will need to support your client. For example, if you agree to take on a merits case, we will provide you with information to run a conflicts check, send over a referral memo on your client, set up an orientation call to familiarize you with the resources we provide to support your work, and provide you with the full array of resource materials we offer our volunteers, including a local practice guide providing critical information on accessing the detention center. In addition, the Justice Campaign will discuss with you the mentorship and technical assistance we provide during the course of your work. Note that if we are not immediately able to match you with a case, or if you are not yet ready to commit, we will place you on our roster so that we can reach out to you in the future.

**Please note that once you are assigned to a case and the referral is complete, you must begin work on your case immediately and provide periodic updates on your progress to the Justice Campaign team (further details provided in your orientation).**

For Non-Attorneys

We will discuss in detail your role and commitment before placement. Once you agree to work on a case, we will introduce you to the pro bono attorney whose work you will be supporting. You will be working with the attorney closely, but you can also reach out to Justice Campaign staff throughout the process with any questions you may have.

**Please note that once you are assigned to work on a case with an attorney, it is of utmost importance that you communicate quickly with the attorney and/or volunteer coordinator if you have any problems, concerns, or changes in your commitment.**
