Remote Merits Cases

The Immigration Justice Campaign is seeking attorneys to represent noncitizens detained at detention centers across the country in their applications for relief from removal (asylum or cancellation of removal). This opportunity involves (remotely) meeting with the client, drafting an application for relief from removal, collecting supporting evidence, and conducting a hearing on the merits of the case in immigration court. The Support We Provide
Your work will be supported by several innovated resources: (1) An in-house expert who will mentor you and a group of other attorneys with similarly situated cases; (2) An online library of resources and training materials including template briefs, examples, and detailed guides; (3) A hands-on guide to walk you step-by-step through local practices and procedures.

Relief Sought: 42A LPR Cancellation, Withholding of Removal, and Protection under the Convention Against Torture

Mr. MNN is a man in his mid 30s from Jamaica who arrived in the United States in 2005 as a lawful permanent resident. Mr. MNN is eligible to apply for Cancellation of Removal for people who are Legal Permanent Residents as well as fear-based belief related to the murder of his uncle and cousins in Jamaica by political groups. Mr. MNN has two controlled-substance related convictions that are very likely not aggravated felonies. Mr. MNN seeks pro bono assistance with his cancellation case so that he may stay in the United States with his family.

Mr. MSJ is a man in his 40's from China who has lived in the United States since around 2015. He fled China after he was caught participating in Christian worship services. He fears he would be arrested and tortured because of his religion if he returned. Mr. MSJ has a conviction for drug trafficking. He seeks pro bono assistance with his case so that he may remain in safely in the United States.

Mr. OMA is a man in his mid 20's from Togo who arrived in the United States in 2017. He is afraid to return to Togo because the ruling political party would persecute him for being a leadership member of an opposition party. While in Togo, Mr. OMA was a member of an opposition party that organized protests and campaigns against the government, but he was threatened and persecuted. Several of his family and tribe members that were part of the same opposition party have been arrested and killed. Mr. OAM also believes that his family and tribe are being persecuted for being majority Muslim. Mr. OAM has three convictions for his involvement in a hit and run accident to which he pleaded guilty. Mr. OAM seeks pro bono assistance with his asylum case so that he may remain safely in the United States.
